The artist talk allows artists to exemplify their affect. The artist talk provides context, often through narrative and using intentional organization that allows passion and curiosity. To become clear, concise, and consistent in that clarity and consistency, we are presenting a “backstage pass” to our work and our process with the use of clear and legible slides (or other performative presentation, i.e. desktop performance, video, etc.).

In that artist talk, we want to consider how interested and engaged we appear to be in our work and/or our process. We want to display a competency of how we talk as well as a self-criticism and reflection around our own practices. We must consider our own language around time, space, and urgency of our work by using our legible mode of presentation in relation to what we are explaining all while making sure that our presence is as generous as we would like it to be in a public space. Finally, consider the diversity of the audience — such as languages spoken — and choose an appropriate duration for the talk that is conscious of the topic, availability of the audience, and focus.

At its core, the artist talk is a mode of sharing.

The artist talk is not a place for proving yourself.

Sharing is not about proving yourself.
